6.1.6 Least Common Multiple

Today we learned about least common multiple.  We discussed that determining the least common multiple by listing out the multiples can be very time consuming.  We learned a method of using the two numbers prime factors to find the least common multiple.  Below is a link to today's PowerPoint lesson:

6.1.5 Greatest Common Factor

Today we learned about greatest common factor.  We discussed the way students had previously learned which involved listing out all of the factors and finding the largest that the two numbers had in common.  This way can be very time consuming and leads to mistakes if the factors are not listed correctly.  We learned how find the greatest common factor by using prime factorization.  By multiplying all of the common prime factors that two numbers have, you can find the greatest common factor.  Look at examples in the PowerPoint lesson from class today:

Today's HW - p. 148 #'s 37-44

6.1.1-3 Quiz Corrections

Quizzes were returned to students.  They were given the option to correct anything that they got wrong.  Half credit will be returned to their score for anything that they have corrected correctly.  We also took a timed test for division because we had ran short on time last week and had not completed it.  We will continue with unit 1 on Tuesday.

Thursday, August 29, 2013

6.1.1-3 Quiz

Today we took a quiz on sections 6.1.1 through 6.1.3.  The quiz included exponents, order of operations, and scientific notation.  There is no homework tonight.

6.1.3 Scientific Notation continued

We continued learning about scientific notation today.  Yesterday we focused on scientific notation in which the numbers were large and the exponents were positive.  Today we are talking about really small decimals and negative exponents.  Below is a link to today's PowerPoint Lesson:

Timed Tests

Today we took 3 timed tests: addition, subtraction, and multiplication (we ran out of time and will take the division test some time next week).  Students recorded their scores on their record sheet.  This was important because it gives me an idea of the students' skill levels when it comes to basic math.  These were not taken for  a grade.  We will continue to do timed tests throughout the year with a goal of students showing continual improvement in their basic math skills.

There is no homework for the weekend.

Below is a link to a site that allows you to take timed tests:

Thursday, August 22, 2013

6.1.2 Order of Operations

Today we learned about the order of operations.  One of the common mistakes students make is assuming multiplication always comes before division.  That is not the case.  Those 2 operations are done in order from left to right, regardless which operation comes first.  The same is true for addition and subtraction.  Below is a link to today's PowerPoint lesson:

6.1.2 Order of Operations Lesson

Today's HW - p. 134 #'s 12-20

Introduction

Today we got to know each other.  I told students about myself and began the process of learning their names.  I introduced students to this website and showed them how to answer the problem of the day.  Today's homework is for students to take home the Million Words "assignment."  I would like parents to tell me about their child in a million words or less.  Also, students need to bring their binder, tabs/dividers, and loose leaf paper to class tomorrow as we will be setting up our binders.  Below is a link to the Million Words assignment:
